When Zack Jones was 21, he left his Iowa hometown of Malvern and headed west to Arizona with hopes of becoming an artist. At the time, he was glad to leave southwest Iowa behind for what he thought were bigger and better things.
150-year revival: Malvern's Art Church
"My brothers and my cousins — we always talked growing up about how we wanted to buy an old Main Street building and do something cool with it." For Jones, the opportunity came 11 years ago in the form of a 150-year-old ...
Malvern, Iowa has seen a beautification project spearheaded by local artist Zack Jones. Vibrant art and sculpture adorn the community of around 1,000 residents in hopes to bring tourism and revitalize the small town from the outside inward.
Outside it is drab and gray and cold. Nature’s palette, in this still-winter of a spring, has gone bust. But inside the Art Church, it is summer. Brilliant blues, fire oranges and all the colors in between light up a former Presbyterian church in a summer sunset that takes up three of four walls and all of the 27-foot ceiling.
This abandoned 19th century church has been transformed into the most breathtaking art studio! Iowa’s countryside is home to some incredible history! The smallest towns in the Hawkeye State each hold stories of their own, and it’s worth making a trip to see the treasures each town is hiding.
When Zack Jones stands outside the front door of the old Presbyterian church in Malvern, with clouds swirling high above the steeple, it's easy to believe him when he says "it was meant to be."
"I want it to be what a church is built for," Jones, the founder of Project Art Church, said. "I want it to be spiritual. I want it to be undeniable when people walk in and they see this. "I've preached about historical preservation and repurposing, so it's really like living out those things."
Southwest Iowa man opens the "Art Church": Saturday night, a group of storytellers gathered at a century old church in South Iowa to share their words with the crowd. As they told their tales, the very building they were sitting had it's own story to tell.
Historical Preservation and the Arts are key ingredients to Malvern's recent Renaissance. Public art, Malvern Concert Series, Southwest Iowa Art Tour, Wabash Trace Nature Trail, and seasonal art shows create a quaint small town America experience while strengthening economic development. Support local is the difference between a dying rural community or a vibrant rural destination within the Omaha Metro.
Supporting the Arts is more than a catchphrase to me, it's a mantra. Bringing art to rural areas, and supporting the local artists there, has been a lifelong passion of mine.
Art in rural areas has the power to enrich lives, create tourism, and inspire positive change. Public art highlights cultural values and collective aspirations, and stimulates local economy by creating tourism that benefits small businesses.
Art is everywhere you look. It beautifies the space and time of our daily lives - musicians who got their start in our local venues, handmade historical architecture on our street corners, meticulously crafted sculptures that decorate our public parks, made-from-scratch cuisine that reminds us of home.
Opportunities to support the arts are everywhere you look too. It can be as simple as expressing appreciation to an artist, attending a show at a local venue, purchasing a one-of-kind a piece that has meaning to you, or making a donation to a public installation in your town.
Supporting the arts is supporting a transformative and valuable part of our culture. It is a mission that is near and dear to me, I hope it becomes so to you too. Thank you for your support. ZJ
